Description
Showing 86,700 miles, this well-maintained 1987 Mercedes-Benz 420SL has recently been serviced and benefits from a new set of tyres, new rear brakes and a recently fitted mohair soft top. It is offered with extensive history and presents in excellent condition throughout following long-term ownership.
The 420SL is the rarest of the regular production R107 models. Introduced in 1986 as the successor to the 380SL, it formed part of the final evolution of the long-running R107 series, which remained in production until 1989.
While Mercedes-Benz produced tens of thousands of the 300SL, 500SL and 560SL variants, only 2,148 examples of the 420SL were built. The model was never officially sold in the United States, which helps explain its comparatively low production numbers today.
Power comes from the smooth and refined M116 4.2-litre V8 engine, producing 218 bhp and 243 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a four-speed automatic transmission, the 420SL is capable of accelerating from 0–60 mph in around 8.5 seconds and reaching a top speed of approximately 132 mph. Performance is close to that of the 500SL, but with slightly improved refinement and fuel efficiency, and the 4.2-litre V8 is widely regarded as one of the smoothest and most balanced engines offered in the R107 range.
As one of the later R107 models, the 420SL benefited from a number of important technical improvements over earlier cars. These included revised front suspension geometry for improved handling, a rear anti-roll bar, larger ventilated disc brakes with standard ABS, a limited-slip differential, headlamp wash/wipe and cruise control. The car also features the distinctive 15-inch ‘Gullideckel’ flat-face alloy wheels, along with a deeper front air dam and improved corrosion protection through galvanised body panels.
The result is widely considered to represent the R107 at its most developed — a refined and robust grand tourer from Mercedes-Benz’s peak engineering era, combining the marque’s renowned build quality with timeless styling and excellent long-distance usability.
History & Maintenance
This particular car was first registered in October 1987 and has effectively had six owners from new. The history file includes spreadsheets and numerous invoices documenting maintenance and work carried out between 1991 and 2025.
During the late 1990s the car was maintained by Silver Arrows Automobiles of Putney. The original service book was unfortunately misplaced following a service carried out in May 2001 at 58,576 miles; however, correspondence confirming this is included within the history file.
Subsequent servicing was carried out primarily by Appleford Car Engineering in Abingdon, later by Mercedes-Benz Bradford. Over the past decade the car has been regularly maintained by Mercedes-Benz Milton Keynes, with the most recent service completed in May 2024 at 86,090 miles. This included the replacement of the rear brake discs and calipers along with a new set of Falken tyres. More recently, a new mohair soft top was installed in December 2025. The car currently has an MOT valid until January 2027 and, under the UK’s rolling 40-year exemption rules, it will become both road-tax exempt and MOT-exempt next year.
There’s also a optional external temperature gauge mounted in the centre of the dashboard. The car also comes with a wind deflector stored in the boot, a spare pair of sun visors, rubber floor mats, an indoor car cover, two sets of keys, and a stand for the removable hard top.
Well maintained and fully documented, this 1987 Mercedes-Benz 420SL is a rare, usable classic ready to enjoy today.
